These little books are fascinating and delightful in the way they move and reveal different parts of the pictures. Individual boards are connected with ribbons which makes it an ideal project for first steps in bookbinding.

In the workshop you will learn the process of backing cotton material to make bookcloth and the technique to cover boards for hardback books. The construction of the Jacobs ladder with ribbons is unique but not difficult. The design can be kept very simple or you can adopt a more complex sequence of images following a clear formula.

Suggestions for designs can vary from numbers, colours or animals for the young; photos, advent calendars, pre-printed panel, charm packs. This is also a good project to use up left over material, bookcloth, thick board and decorated papers.

Materials needed: Board, Cotton or bookcloth for images, ribbons, glue.

Jacobs ladder in action. This little book is based on a french ditty about a fox running past and hiding. The idea is to flick the book back and forth and let the little ones find the fox among the other animals.

I will guide you step by step to make a unique and beautiful hardback notebook for those treasured notes.

Through this process you will learn basic bookmaking skills and techniques which will start you on your journey into bookmaking into notebooks, folders, albums ... It is also a very useful workshop to get back to basic and pick up some tips on the way.

Book will have 5 signatures of folded good quality laid paper which will be sewn together. We will make our own book cloth with a cotton material of your choice and add a complimentary spine cover and inside endpapers

Make a beautiful personal folder with traditional bookmaking techniques using your own choice of cotton bookcloth.
Make a small (11x11 inches), medium (13 x 13 inches) or large (15 x 15 inches) folder to keep your patchwork safely flat or your documents, photos, certificates. Line with felt, brushed cotton or paper. The varieties are endless.

This digital artwork is part of an ongoing collaboration between Cycle Heaven and Bar Lane. I wanted to capture the daily activities of the workshop and the skill and speed of the technicians. I brought in my 25 year old bike to be reconditioned and photographed for the duration of the service.

A SPECIAL piece of art work has gone on display at York St John University.

Vice Chancellor, Professor David Fleming and guests were at the unveiling of the latest Alumni Abudantes panel created by local artist and alumna Catherine Scriven. It is the latest piece to make up the university's visual alumni archive.

It extends Catherine's previous work, Alumni Abudantes, which is on display in Quad South Passage and was installed in 2010.

The panel, Exceptional Changes, depicts the last four years at the university and continues the style of the previous work, featuring key moments, people and events in a series of overlapping images.

It was commissioned by the Association of York St John and Ripon Training College who used the event to mark the disbanding of the association and official hand over to the Alumni team.

Catherine, who graduated in 2008, thanked alumnus John Maw for his knowledge of the institution's history and help in creating the piece.

She said: “The piece features the buildings, awards for staff and students, different societies, sports and honorary graduates – all the changes that have taken place over the last four to five years, under the stewardship of the current Vice Chancellor. I also wanted to depict the aims of the University which include exceptional learning and teaching and an exceptional student experience.”

Professor Fleming said: “We show this artwork to many people who come to visit, and will continue to do so. Everyone finds it fascinating and it is a great way to show, visibly, the history of the University.”

What I have been working on:

Over the last year I have been working on a new digital artwork which is just back from the printers and ready to be installed for unveiling on Monday, 10th November 2014.

A detail from the Artwork named "EXCEPTIONAL CHANGES", which celebrates the numerous changes which have happened at York St John university, under the leadership of Prof Fleming over the relatively short period of the past 5 years.

It especially commemorates the handing over of the old student Association of the Colleges of Ripon and York St John, created in the 1890's to the alumni society created in 2008.

I will post full images after the unveiling.

JAPANESE ACCORDION BOOKS

The design for this accordion book was based on an example that a bookmaking enthusiast brought back from Japan. The original was used to display small reproductions of delicate Japanese prints. We thought it would be wonderful for displaying photographs, your small projects or an array of gorgeous Japanese materials.

3 Points of contact Residency

In November 2013 I participated in a project called 3 points of contact.

This is based on the climbing principle that to avoid to fall you need to keep three points of contact. The aim of the residency was to create contacts, networks for artists. 3 cities in the UK participated: York, Glasgow and Penzance. The Main Artists Van Calhau are a couple from Portugal. Various artist travelled between the three points and the collaborative research and process continued through the various locations.

I was involved for two weeks, researching, exchanging, and documenting the activities in the workshop in the The New Schoolhouse Gallery in York.

Out of the documentation photographs, I created a composite image (2 x A1 size) to capture the activities which had happened over the two weeks in the studio. Although I couldn't travel to Glasgow and Penzance, the artwork could at least represent my involvement with the project.
